Entre palavras e identidades: Variação linguística na Comunidade Quilombola Castanhalzinho em Garrafão do Norte-PA

Abstract

This research addresses the linguistic variation present in the speech of inhabitants of the remaining Quilombo community of Castanhalzinho, located in the northeastern region of the state of Pará, Brazil. The analysis of linguistic variations in the Quilombola community of Vila Castanhalzinho reveals the intricate relationship between language and cultural identity. Language plays a central role in transmitting traditions and values among older generations, enriching the understanding of Quilombola history. The overarching objective is to investigate the linguistic variation in the speech of residents in order to identify words, aspects, and expressions of African and Afrodescendant origin. Specific objectives include discussing linguistic variation, understanding the community's history and its inhabitants, and examining the main characteristics of their speech and external influences. Bibliographic research and fieldwork were conducted, involving questionnaires, interviews, and observation. The absence of words, aspects, and expressions of African origin is noted, as well as the lack of social, cultural, and economic activities stemming from African and Afro-descendant traditions. However, younger generations often adopt the predominant language of the surrounding society for integration, influenced by globalization and media. The emphasis on linguistic norms in educational institutions also impacts the attitudes of young people toward their mother tongue, leading to the suppression of authentic variations.
